How To Use Gmail keyboard Shortcuts On Your Computer

Gmail keyboard shortcuts are an easier way to carry out tasks within the e-mail application in a fast and most effective way. It makes working very easy. To use the shortcuts, you must have a Gmail account and secondly, you have to enable the shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts make you smart and improve working time. Saving a few minutes while working with PC mandates user to use the keyboard effectively.

Gmail is an email service application developed and owned by Google. Gmail is accessible in any platform – web, phones, and some third-party programs that synchronizes email content through Post Office Protocol (POP) and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). There are huge benefits to using Gmail.

To use the shortcuts, you must have a Gmail account and secondly, you have to enable the shortcuts. Enable the shortcuts by:

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. In the top right, click Settings. (Gear Icon)
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the “Keyboard shortcuts” section.
  5. Select Keyboard shortcuts on.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click Save Changes.

Note: The Gmail web interface must be active, then press any of the shortcuts key or combination to make it work. Press down the first key before hitting next ones.

Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts And Their Functions:

A – Reply to all Message Recipients.
C – Compose New Email or message.
D – Compose New message in a New tab.
E – Archive your conversation from any view.
F – Forward a message to a New Recipient.
G – Search chat contacts.
J – Go to the recent Older conversation.
K – Go to the recent Newer conversation.
L – Open “label as” menu to label a conversation. Also, open the Group button to Group Contacts.
M – Mute conversation and all future messages unless sent or CC directly to you.

N – Next message in an open conversation (Only applicable in “conversation view”).
O – Open your conversation.
P – Previous message in an open conversation (Only applicable in “conversation view”).
Q – Move cursor directly to the Search Box.
R – Reply to a message.
S – Add or remove star to a message or conversation. Stars give special status to messages.
U – Refresh the page and return to the Inbox, Conversation list, or Contact list.
V – Open “move to” menu to move the conversation to a different folder or label.
X – Select conversation or contact automatically.
Z – Undo the last action.
Esc – Remove the cursor from your current input field.

G + A – Go to All mail.
G + C – Go to Contact List.
G + D – Go to Drafts Folder.
G + I – Go to Inbox.
G + K – Go to Tasks.
G + L – Go to a label.
G + P – Open phone contacts.
G + S – Go to Starred conversations.
G + T – Go to Sent messages.
H + A – Show Archived Hangouts.
H + C – Focus on the conversation list.
H + I – Show Hangout requests.
H + M – Display menu.
H + P – Open phone contacts.
Y + O – Archive conversation and move to the next one.
Tab + Enter – Send messages after composing.

Ctrl + K – Insert a link to search bar or text in the edit box.
Ctrl + M – Open spelling suggestions.
Ctrl + B – Bold a highlighted text in compose edit box.
Ctrl + I – Italics a highlighted text in compose edit box.
Ctrl + U – Underline a highlighted text in compose edit box.
Ctrl + Enter – Send email or message.
Ctrl + . – Advance to the next chat or compose.
Ctrl + , – Advance to previous chat or compose.
Ctrl + [ – Indent less. Shift word or text some inches left.
Ctrl + ] – Indent more. Shift word or text some inches to the right.
 Ctrl + \ – Remove formatting from a highlighted text or word.

Shift + Esc – Focus on the main window.
Shift + R – Reply a message in a New window (Works only in “conversation view”).
Shift + A – Reply all Message Recipients in a New window (Works only in “conversation view”).
Shift + T – Compose Email or message in a New window.
Shift + F – Forward a message to a New recipient in a New window.
Shift + N – Update conversation when there are New Messages.
 Shift + I – Mark message as Read and skip to next message.
Shift + U – Mark message as Unread.
Shift + T – Add conversation to Tasks.
Shift + 1 – Mark Message as Spam and moves it to the Spam folder.
Shift + 3 – Delete message permanently or move the message to the Trash folder.

Ctrl + Shift + L – Align text or messages left. Works in compose edit box.
Ctrl + Shift + E – Align text or messages center. Works in compose edit box.
Ctrl + Shift + R – Align text or messages right. works in compose edit box.
Ctrl + Shift + 5 – Previous font.
Ctrl + Shift + 6 – Next font.
Ctrl + Shift + 7 – Access numbered list.
Ctrl + Shift + 8 – Access bulleted list.
Ctrl + Shift + 9 – Quote a word or text.
Ctrl + Shift + – – Decrease text size.
Ctrl + Shift + + – Increase text size.

* + A – Select all conversations.
* + N – Deselect all conversations.
* + R – Select read conversations.
* + U – Select unread conversations.
* + S – Select starred conversations.
* + T – Select unstarred conversations.

/ – The cursor appears in the search box for you to search for emails or messages.
 _ – Mark unread from the selected message.
+ – Allow Gmail to learn what’s important to you by marking unclassified messages. (Specific to Priority Inbox)
– Mark as Not important as above.
; – Expand the entire conversation.
: – Collapse entire conversation.
, – Move focus to the toolbar.
! – Report message as spam.
# – Delete a message.
` – Go to next Inbox section.
~ – Go to previous Inbox section.
– Open “more actions” drop-down menu.
? – Open keyboard shortcut help.
 [ – Remove the current view’s label from your conversation, Archives, and move to the previous one.
] – Remove the current view’s label from your conversation, Archives, and move to the next one.
